5 Invaluable Tips for Writing a Book

5 Invaluable Tips for Writing a Book

Writing a book is a big deal.

It’s a digital asset that will outlast you.

I hear a lot of talk about generational wealth.

The type of wealth that will be passed on from lineage to lineage.

Well, a book is what I call a generational idea.

Others will make direct eye contact with your mind.

Although writing a book is a big deal, it’s not impossible.

This article is meant to empower you.

You’ll see a lot of authors are jaded & give mopey advice:

  • I hate the industry.
  • Writing a book takes so much time.
  • Why even bother?

In this article, we will cultivate a go-getter attitude!

I’ve published over 5 plus books on Amazon, wrote multiple ebooks & have helped upcoming entrepreneurs flesh out their ideas.

Here are some tips for writing a book that you should be cognizant of…

1. Every Writer Has a Different Process

I recall the first time I met an author, they told me how detailed oriented they were.

They would write the same sentence over and over again.

It took them multiple years to write a book.

This guy said he’d have it no other way.

I heard him talking and wanted to jump off a bridge.

You couldn’t pay me to do such a grueling, boring process.

My writing process is the opposite.

I believe in fast creation and slow editing.

I am not of the philosophy that I should draw out the creation process.

Who is correct, me or the other author?

That’s up to you to decide.

Just know that different people have different processes.

2. Independent Publishing Impacts Content

People love to talk shit about Amazon.

But I’m a huge fan of Amazon & what they have done for authors.

They have empowered authors to write their own books.

Grow an audience on your social media & refer them to your Amazon page.

The reason creating your own path is one of the important tips for writing a book is that content is impacted.

If you are self-published, then you will have way more freedom.

The content changes entirely because the decision tree opens up.

This allows for more input on what to write rather than writing for a particular individual.

I’m not making a case for self-publishing.

Nor am I going to walk you through the steps to get a book published on KDP.

Just know that the self-published route creates more freedom for an upcoming writer.

The freedom will impact your words.

3. Enjoy Researching Before Writing

When you picture a writer, you may think of a person who writes a lot.

Sure, that’s true.

But what’s just as important is consuming a lot of information.

There are FICTION authors who spend years researching real-world events.

You may be thinking:

‘But they are writing fiction. Why the hell are they researching nonfiction events?’

It’s because they are basing their works on truth.

Always be in learning mode.

Especially on the topic that you plan to write your book on.

It’s best when the book is based on some personal experience.

So you’re not just researching away on topics that do not resonate with you.

If the topics you are writing about resonate with your first-hand experiences…

Then researching will be fun.

4. Outline: Yay or Nay?

There are different philosophies regarding the outline.

Some love it.

Some hate it.

This ties back to tip #1.

Every writer has a different process.

‘What do you like to do with your books, Armani?’

For nonfiction books, I like an outline.

While for fiction books, I don’t like an outline.

For nonfiction books, the outline serves as the skeleton.

The more you do your research stage, the more the outline creates itself.

I don’t go too detailed.

But I do know plenty of authors love going super detailed with their outlines.

They mention the more detailed they are, the more the writing takes care of itself.

I can see that!

For fiction, I like Stephen King’s philosophy.

He believes a great story is being discovered.

He’s learning what is going to happen in the story just as much as the characters in it.

That’s what gives him a thrill.

For outlining, it’s up to you.

5. Writing Comes Down to 2 Stages

There may be some analysis paralysis happening.

You see a book, and see :

  • Covers (front, side & back design)
  • Summaries
  • Listing page
  • Book content
  • Table of contents etc.

It will get your mind running fast.

At this stage, it’s smart to remind ourselves of the fundamentals.

As the famous saying goes:

It’s important to keep the important thing, the important thing.

The main tip for writing a book is to focus on:

  • Creating/editing.

It’s best when you separate those hats.

When I create and edit my writing at the same time, it creates a timid attitude.

Create first.

Be fearless.

Act like no one will see your writing.

Then edit.

Be timid.

Act like the world will see your writing.

Once you have the manuscript done, that’s when all the other variables are a few Fiver hires away.

You don’t have to create your own cover.

There are plenty of freelancers for that.

You don’t have to format your books.

There are plenty of freelancers for that.

Keep the important thing the important thing.
