Reading the Same Book Multiple Times
The following chapter is from Limit Breaker: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
There are readers who read the same book multiple times.
On repeat.
But why?
If you read it once, why read it again??
I would ponder this question as I watched reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond.
Used to watch that show so much that I had plenty of the lines memorized.
But the younger me didn’t catch the irony of watching the same sitcom over and over again.
Then questioning why people read the same book over and over again.
‘Why did you keep on watching Everybody Loves Raymond?’
Because it was my favorite show.
Each time I watched it, I found something in the show that I hadn’t noticed before.
Sometimes, I noticed something big & other times, it was tiny.
As I got older, I started to realize the same concept held true with reading.
Each time you read, you read from a new lens.
Finding the right book is all about quality.
There are plenty of books that I can re-read over and over again.
However, I don’t find the need.
‘How do you know which one was right to re-read?’
I wish I could give you a logical response but I can’t.
It was a FEELING.
As I read the book, I saw myself in it.
Each word resonated with me.
Felt like it was designed for me.
When a book is right for you, your entire nervous system gets engaged.
The body feels lighter, a few tingles in the spine, and a strong sensation in the chest.
It’s not something that I only noticed.
Talked to plenty of people who have reported back on the same sensations.
So, stay alert for these sensations.
Re-reading a book multiple times turns words into pictures and pictures into principles.
No matter which book is out there, reread it if you see yourself in it.
It doesn’t just speak to the head.
It speaks to the heart.
Each time you re-read a book, you go from surface level to depth level.
No longer the waves.
But it’s a matter of experiencing how deep the ocean goes.
Awareness expands.
Maybe I should bring this up.
No copying.
Just because a book resonates with someone else’s life doesn’t mean it will necessarily resonate with yours.
Each time you read a page; it feels different.
Each time you read a chapter; it feels different.
Each time you read the book; it feels different.
The words are the same.
But the person reading it is different.
