Reading a Book a Week
The following chapter is from Street Smarts: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
The average CEO reads 52 books a year.
Which equates to a book a week.
This sounds like a mythical number, until you realize it’s not.
Reading a book a week is perfectly doable.
You don’t need speed reading gifts for it either.
You just need determination and a strategy.
‘Is the strategy difficult?’
Not at all.
- Divide the book into 5 parts.
- Aim to finish it by the weekdays.
- If you can’t finish it by the weekdays, then use your weekends to finish.
Boom, you’re done.
This seems like an easy strategy, but only a few can manage.
From my estimate, it requires 45 minutes to 1.5 hour reading a day depending on the size of the book.
(numbers can vary tremendously based on focus levels & reading pace).
‘Have you done it?’
Yep, plenty of times. I still do this tactic.
Great writers are great readers.
Great speakers are great watchers.
Top athletes watch their game back after they are done playing.
The basketball player, Chris Paul, watches as much basketball as he can. From college all the way to the professionals.
Reading a book a week is a fun challenge because it develops linguistics intelligence.
Linguistics intelligence is the gift with words.
It’s broken down to:
- Consumption: Reading, Listening.
- Production: Writing, Speaking.
The easy target of splitting a book into 5 gives the mind a clear objective.
If you have the determination, this is perfectly doable.
Don’t rush.
Read with a gentle pace that allows you to understand.
