How to Deal with a Boring Texter
Have you ever met someone who was boring on text?
- They gave 1-word responses.
- Only answered questions but never asked them.
- And took forever to respond back.
However, there was a twist.
‘What?’
They were pretty cool in real life.
If they were so cool in real life, why couldn’t they behave the same way via text??
To make matters worse, it felt like their text personality drowned out their real-world personality.
Because real world interactions come and go.
But texts are fixed in time.
Which one do you think is easier to replay?
The purpose of this blog is to share how to not be a boring texter and how to deal with boring texters.
Boring texting is an epidemic in the age of seamless communication, so let’s make sure we don’t fall into that boat.
Why Texting with Personality is Important
You may have read the intro and thought:
‘Oh snap, I’m a boring texter!’
There are multiple reasons for boring texting. A few reasons are:
- The texter doesn’t care about the person they are speaking to.
- They are nervous.
- The texter normally talks pretty dry with everyone.
- They do not place much importance on digital communication in general.
For the 1st one, they are speaking to someone who is annoying and keeps asking them for stuff.
This causes them to be short via text on purpose.
The 2nd reason for being a boring texter is due to nerves.
In real-world conversations, it’s easy to share the first thing that comes to mind.
But with text, there’s a higher likelihood of overthinking and overanalyzing.
The 3rd reason for being a boring texter is because of a naturally dry personality.
For this group of people, it’s not personal.
They just talk like that with everyone.
And for the 4th reason, it’s because they don’t place too much importance on digital communication.
For them, they subconsciously think:
‘When I meet them in person, they’ll see what I’m about.’
All reasons for boring texting.
How to Be More Entertaining on Text
The first step into being more entertaining on text is to actually care.
Articulate the importance of digital communication.
Rather than viewing it as a chore, see it as an opportunity.
‘How can I view it as an opportunity?’
Well, for 1…you can craft your perception at will.
Attractive writing is a skill set.
This is when the personality seeps into the words.
Rather than focusing on the act of texting, focus more on the person you are speaking with.
Remember, the phone and the telecommunications are just the medium.
The texter’s goal is to focus less on the medium and focus more on the recipient, so the message takes care of itself.
To make this easier, smile while texting.
Smiling makes a person feel better.
When they feel better, they write better.
‘Cool! So, articulate the value of texting, remember that I’m talking to a person, and smile. Anything else?’
Yes. Practice!
Practice is fundamental to developing communication skills.
Even the most well-intentioned people need to shake off the rust every now and then.
Therefore, practice with all types of personalities.
‘All types?’
Yes, this brings me to my next point.
How to Deal with Boring Texters
When dealing with a boring texter, the first reaction may be:
‘They want to be short with me?? Do they even know who I am??’
However, this is the perfect time to reframe the scenario.
If we only get better at attractive writing through practice…
Do we want a good texter to practice with or a bad texter?
In my opinion, trying to breathe life into a dead conversation is a better workout.
It forces the texter who is trying to improve their attractive writing to:
- Ask more open-ended questions.
- Make more jokes.
- And make comments that illicit some response.
To do any of the above, it’s best to assume that the bad texter is nervous.
‘Why view them as nervous? Because I think they are snobby.’
When we view someone as snobby, it’s difficult to put in the effort to help them.
However, when we view them as nervous, it’s easier for us to make the effort to loosen them up.
By viewing them as nervous, it’s easier to view ourselves as the higher social valued creature.
All comedians, speakers, and leaders realize they are the higher value.
Which allows them to have a gentle cadence and not rush.
Therefore, to deal with a bad texter:
- Assume they are nervous.
- View them as practice opportunities to strengthen the attractive writing skillset.
Creating Opportunities Through Text
Offline communication is great.
Something about face-to-face will never get old.
However, don’t view the importance of offline communication as the unimportance of online communication.
The average person hangs onto their phone.
Impressions are made and solidified through the phone.
Often, what happens with the phone is that it will either:
- Create opportunities.
or
- Take opportunities away.
If you are a boring texter, that’s not good at all.
Enthusiasm means unlocking the God within.
If you can’t be somewhat enthusiastic about writing a text, it’s difficult to assess the opportunities which are silently being taken away.
‘Does that mean I have to be enthusiastic forever?’
Eventually, the enthusiasm can wane once the rapport has deepened.
That’s when short texts aren’t mistaken for a lack of interest.
Instead, short texts are seen as normal to keep the dialogue ping-ponging.
In the beginning stages, effort is required.
Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice makes progress.
