What Writing 50,000 Tweets Taught Me
The following chapter is from Tough Love: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
It needs to be mechanical before it becomes dynamic.
It needs to be boring before it becomes fun.
This is why it’s better to start something with an iffy attitude rather than not start at all.
The attitude is something that stops a lot of us.
This is a big reason why procrastination and perfectionism are a thing.
-Procrastination will never get us started.
-Perfectionism will never get us finished.
In terms of writing, it’s better to do it mechanically with a sour attitude, rather than not do it at all.
Why?
Because at least you’re writing.
It’s December 13th, 2020, at the time of writing this. I started my Twitter in June 2018. Since the time has elapsed, my account has accumulated 50,000+ tweets.
It’s difficult to put that into perspective.
Because what does 50,000 tweets exactly equate to?
How many blog posts does it equal?
Or how many average book sizes does it come down to?
Despite having difficulty putting that number in perspective in terms of material elements, I can put it in terms of emotional & thinking elements.
‘How do you feel now?’
I feel different.
I believe writing is one of the best methods out there for people to change up their thinking patterns. It’s because you are forcefully slowing down thoughts & understanding them.
It’s probably better to start writing before jumping straight into meditation for a lot of people.
The average human mind has consumed tons of mainstream garbage, nonstop horror movies, gossip, entertained negative thoughts for YEARS.
Sitting down for meditation may be a tall order.
Still doable.
On the contrary, building a writing habit is something that can serve as linguistic meditation.
What does meditation mean?
There are different definitions out there.
One of the most popular definitions is:
- Making yourself familiar with.
‘Okay & if I were to begin writing, what would I talk about?’
You. Making yourself familiar with you.
As 50,000 tweets have flown by, on an average day I think much differently.
I am much more AWARE of the thoughts I entertain.
It’s quicker to spot thoughts that don’t serve me.
This is also great, because as storytellers, the main goal is to put the mind in motion.
How we put it in motion is different for different people.
-For writers, it’s through words.
-For photographers, it’s through pictures.
-For movie directors, it’s through film.
What 50,000 tweets showed me is that thinking influences emotions & emotions influence thinking.
It’s a loop.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the mind-body connection.
It’s time to look into the thought-vibration connection.
A deflating thought has a deflating effect on the body.
Causing us to feel tired.
Don’t believe me?
Try it out for yourself.
Think of a sad moment from your life.
- Like when someone you were close with passed away.
Then think of an exciting thing you have coming up in your day.
- Like buying a Wawa sandwich later.
It’s a change in physiology.
I believe that creating content to dominate the mind is going to become a bigger thing in the future. Just like meditation started to blow up in the 90s. I don’t know when hypnosis started to blow up, but I’m sure there was an era. And how NLP blew up in the 2010s.
It’s just how the game works.
Everything we are doing is trying to gain mastery of the mind.
This connection cannot stop at philosophy alone.
It needs to become real to us through experience.
Knowledge in motion = Experience.
50,000 tweets have changed my thinking faculties & raised my emotional energy.
It taught me something big.
‘What is that?’
That writer’s block was an illusion all along.
The more ideas you create, the more ideas you are prone to create.
Ideas are infinite in nature.
Eventually, you become a locomotive that’s difficult (if not impossible) to stop.
It’s all about creating that opportunity for yourself and beginning, so the momentum can catch up.
