The Evolution of Dave Chappelle
The following chapter is from Tough Love: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
What is behind the humor of Dave Chappelle?
What makes him funny?
Every comedian has a different style.
Some are laid back & others are more in your face the entire time.
Dave Chappelle is a unique blend of both styles.
He knows when to be laid back & when to amp up the energy.
What makes Dave stick out is that it doesn’t feel like he is telling jokes.
It just seems like he is telling us about his day.
There are 2 kinds of humor:
Active.
Passive.
Active is when you set the intention to make someone laugh.
Ex: telling a joke.
Passive is when you don’t set any intent to make someone laugh, but they laugh anyway.
Ex: telling them about your day and a part of your day just happened to be funny.
Dave is great because he seems to be doing passive humor while he is actually telling jokes.
His bits as of late is more chill & makes you think.
Taking up that George Carlin vibe by incorporating politics as well.
They used to say that George Carlin was a philosopher who just happened to be funny.
Dave Chappelle seems to be evolving more into that role too.
He is a great critical thinker that happens to be funny too.
The beauty is that he’s a comedian.
It’s a mental sport.
Meaning… that if he can manage his creativity well over time, he will only get better.
