The following chapter is from Word Play: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills

Having too many friends is nothing to be proud of.

It’s actually something to view as a red flag.

Humans are creatures of energy.

On a daily basis, there is a finite level of energy to spend.

View energy as money.

It doesn’t matter if you have a friend circle of 5 or 50.

Ultimately, the energy remains the same.

Say you have 100$.

If you spread it out to 50 friends, then you are giving each of them 2$.

If you spread it out to 5 friends, then you are giving each of them 20$.

I don’t know about you, but if someone gives me 2 bucks, I’ll probably forget.

But if someone gives me 20 bucks, I’ll think:

‘What a generous fellow.’

You can’t give everyone you meet 20 bucks if you have 100$ to spend.

Same with energy.

Which is why it is imperative to place people into groups.

Rather than calling everyone a friend, prime the mind to see acquaintances as well.

Acquaintances are immensely powerful in the social world.

They get a bad reputation for some reason.

No clue why.

Some people get offended when you call them an acquaintance.

I feel proud.

Acquaintances keep a social circle dynamic.

The cool part?

They don’t require that much energy!

A friend is someone who you keep consistent touch with.

Someone you provide a consistent stream of energy to.

However, with an acquaintance, one or two touch points a month keeps the social bond strong!

My social law is:

- Keep your friend circle small. This allows for stronger bonds & fewer snakes.

- Keep your acquaintance circle large. This allows for more versatility & connections.

This 2-step principle leads to a network emerging in no time.
