Why Authenticity is Harder Than It Looks<\/h1>\n
The following chapter is from Limit Breaker: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills<\/a><\/pre>\n
In 2013, there was this radio personality named Charlamagne tha God who was blowing up in the hip hop space.<\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
He was a radio personality for the show, The Breakfast Club.<\/em><\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
There was a targeted audience who resonated with him because he asked tough questions to musicians & often made inappropriate comments.<\/p>\n
One of his most famous moments was making the rapper Lil Mama cry on air.<\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
I noticed that people dubbed Charlamagne as ‘authentic.’<\/p>\n
If you were to ask me, he just seemed like an asshole.<\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
However, his numbers did not lie.<\/p>\n
He was a big factor in making The Breakfast Club one of the most popular radio shows.<\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
As 7 years passed, Charlamagne seems like a different guy.<\/p>\n
He seems like he matured a bit.<\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
In one of his recent interviews, he was trying to give some advice to an upcoming artist who was spreading a bunch of negative energy.<\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
And that younger artist scoffed at him & was like:<\/p>\n
\u2018Man, I know you aren\u2019t talking. You are the king of negative energy!\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
Charlamagne looked pretty taken aback and asked:<\/p>\n
\u2018What, people can’t grow?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
Charlamagne had a point.<\/p>\n
However, his negative energy was coming back to haunt him.<\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
Question is, which Charlamagne was the real one?<\/p>\n
The one back then or the one now?<\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
Better question is, what is authenticity?<\/strong><\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
It’s difficult to be authentic due to 2 important variables:<\/p>\n
    \n
  1. Life is constantly throwing us different experiences requiring a different version of ourselves.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Authenticity requires reflection.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
       <\/p>\n
      The first point can be seen in our present moment.<\/p>\n
      An example is when you have to wear different hats in a social interaction.<\/p>\n
      Like when you are talking to a shy kid vs a talkative kid.<\/p>\n
      If you are capable of adjusting, each person will see a different version of you.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      The shy kid will see the talkative side of you.<\/p>\n
      The talkative kid will see the listening side of you.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      You’re the same person.<\/p>\n
      Yet, your behavior changed.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      Another reason authenticity is difficult is because it requires reflection. Reflection also requires 2 important variables:<\/p>\n
      -The ability to control thinking.<\/p>\n
      -Humility.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      Some people can’t focus for more than 10 seconds. So, reflecting becomes tougher.<\/p>\n
      That’s where a journal can help. It forcefully slows down your thoughts.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      Cool, a journal can help slow down your thoughts.<\/p>\n
      But what about the humility part?<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      Well, that’s something we are on our own with.<\/p>\n
      No assistance.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      I’ve known 2 brothers for over 10 years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
       <\/p>\n
      The younger brother seems light years ahead of the older brother in terms of maturity.<\/p>\n
      The older brother seems like a bigger jackass year by year.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      The dude is aging.<\/p>\n
      However, he isn’t growing up.<\/p>\n
      Why?<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      It’s because humility can’t be bought. It’s a game of going in & learning the difference between cocky & confident<\/a> on a FIRSTHAND basis.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      Overall, authenticity is a game of refining.<\/p>\n
      It’s a game of doing our best to realize who we truly are.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      Since starting ArmaniTalks, I\u2019ve talked about social skills, public speaking & human dynamics from MANY different angles.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      Each time, I came to realize that communication with the outside world is mainly based on communication with the inside world.<\/p>\n
       <\/p>\n
      The 5 levels of communication are:<\/p>\n
        \n
      1. Communication with self = Self awareness<\/li>\n
      2. Communication with 1 person = Dialogue<\/li>\n
      3. Many-to-Many communication = Group Interaction<\/li>\n
      4. One-to-many communication = Public Speaking<\/li>\n
      5. Communication + Technology = Media<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
         <\/p>\n
        1 is the most important.<\/p>\n
        1 influences 2 – 5.<\/p>\n
         <\/p>\n
        However, most of us view it as the exact opposite.<\/p>\n
        We focus on 2-5 hoping to figure out 1.<\/p>\n
        This method can work, sure.<\/p>\n
        But it will be suboptimal at best.<\/p>\n
         <\/p>\n
        The world of communication\u2026<\/p>\n
        The game of the outside world…..<\/p>\n
        Has a strange way of consistently directing us to the inside world.<\/p>\n
         <\/p>\n
        Great communicators with depth focus predominantly on building their self-awareness.<\/p>\n
        By asking what stage they currently reside in and how can humility be assessed?<\/p>\n
         <\/p>\n
        Authenticity has many layers.<\/em><\/p>\n
         <\/p>\n
        For others to know the real version of you, you have to put in the leg work & find out the real version…for yourself.<\/p>\n
