Do you know how many people do not take texting seriously?

‘How many?’

A lot.

They leave boring messages.

Write ‘k’ a lot.

Or flat out do not write anything.

‘Why do you think that is?’

It’s because they don’t understand the importance of text.

I’m not only talking about text through your phone.

(Although this post is going to be heavily catered towards that).

I’m also talking about text in blog format, book format, tweet format, etc.

It’s time to understand that the text talks to the subconscious mind.

If you can learn how to be funnier over text, you’ll have a superpower that others are blind to.

Communication comes in all shapes and sizes.

There is face-to-face communication.

And there is machine-to-machine communication.

It’s an error to think that you are talking to a machine.

Nope.

A machine is simply a tool that a human uses.

So even when you are texting, realize that you are talking to a person.

It’s easy to dehumanize someone in the information age.

Heck, that’s how the cards are stacked up!

People have been reduced to a bunch of digits.

Maybe it’s through phone numbers or they are just a digit on your follower count.

This is why you need to constantly prime the mind to see them as people first.

And numbers second.

But you may be wondering, why is text so important?

It’s because humans have short-term memories.

They don’t remember all the details from your face-to-face conversation.

However, with text, it can always be referenced later.

You leave.

But their phone stays.

Let me give you an insight that will boost your charisma.

‘Okay, I’m all ears.’

People love to laugh.

‘This is your insight?? That’s obvious!’

I know it’s obvious.

But how often are others applying this insight in a practical way?

They may know this logically.

However, they do not make attempts at humor.

Often, they are passive and hope that a humorous moment presents itself.

Hope is not a strategy.

Be DELIBERATE with humor.

Don’t just wait for the other person to crack a joke.

Don’t just wait for a funny moment to present itself, so you can be like ‘hey, would you look at that…’

Instead, create a funny moment yourself.

‘How??’

I’m not going to tell you exactly how.

Otherwise, you’ll come off robotic.

But I am going to give you some principles which will spark some Aha moments.

Here are a few.

Being formal has a place in a complex system.

The complex system we live in is a society.

Without any formalities, there will be little decorum.

Know this though:

Formality is a byproduct, not the source.

‘What are you saying?’

At a core level, we are informal creatures, not formal.

Humor, curse words, slang are normal in my book.

These are all informal acts. Not the traditional wear a tie & slacks sort of behavior.

Of course, there is a time and place for this.

Just know that in the real world, informality speeds up rapport.

It causes a pattern interrupt.

‘A pattern what?’

An interrupt from the norm.

Whenever these small glitches happen, the other person feels a flux of energy within & laughs without knowing why.

To learn how to be funnier over text, it’s important to talk to a person’s child side.

Their child side is their emotional side.

And that side never goes away.

At most, it is buried.

‘How do I talk to their child side?’

Talk to them like you’ve known them your entire life.

As if they were your lifelong friend for 5 lifetimes. Now you guys are in the 6th lifetime together.

You may be thinking:

What if I get too comfortable with the other person & rub them the wrong way?

Welcome to the real world.

A part of learning how to be funnier over text is to take risks.

Be okay with uncertainty & knowing that everyone will not get your humor.

Sometimes, you may push it too far. That’s when apologizing shows maturity.

Other times, just live with the results.

A joke which falls flat with one person may have someone else dying with laughter.

It’s a game of learning that it’s not personal.

The average mind sees emojis as emojis.

The storytelling mind sees emojis as emotional remote controllers.

I can call someone a piece of shit and then put a laughing emoji.

Their conscious mind will feel offended.

Their subconscious mind will want to burst out laughing.

So, they will laugh.

The emotional tsunamis of the subconscious can overpower the conscious mind.

Therefore, emojis, gifs & memes are tools to be leveraged.

Plus, it helps you feel calmer too.

When you see yourself using a laughing emoji (or any emoji for that matter) your child side automatically gets engaged.

Remember, words are a byproduct.

We imagine in pictures.

Emojis, gifs & memes can speak a 1000 words.

Only a fool undermines their importance.

I recommend having a Twitter account that you consistently tweet in.

This allows you to write daily.

Did you know a lot of comedians are picking up Twitter & testing out their material?

It takes a lot of work to compress an idea to 280 characters or less to make someone else laugh.

The mere act of you setting the INTENTION to make someone laugh is key.

It doesn’t matter if your joke was funny or not.

Just keep exercising that intention.

That’s what allows you to feel loose.

Especially when you are learning how to be funnier over text.

Some wait for things to happen.

Others make things happen.

Which one are you?

Texting is a great opportunity to turn your personality into words.

Then relay those words over the world.

Rapport builds at faster rates when you can text someone with humor.

Face-to-face communication is great.

It’s the cake of communication.

But don’t ignore the utensils, icing & other variables which allow the cake to exist.

Leverage as many facets as you can.

Learn how to be funnier over text.

And boom! You have a superpower.

For more strategies to go from a boring writer into a persuasive writer, check out:

Why is Text Important?
