Why Squid Game Faced Unexpected Backlash
The following post is from EPIC: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
I saw a few posts on Facebook & Twitter recently making fun of Squid Games.
The way the posts were worded, I couldn’t tell if the posters were being sarcastic or sharing their honest opinion.
-Watching Squid Games will lower your testosterone.
-Instead of watching tv, do something productive.
-The show is good, but nothing great.
I heard the opinions.
I respected the opinions.
However, when it comes to entertainment & art, I don’t take critics seriously.
Their opinions hold little to no value in my world.
I hear what they are saying.
If there is a pattern, I will make a note.
Then I will do my best to consume the art in an unbiased fashion.
The problem with art ‘critics’ is that they perceive the content from their experiences, not mine.
This can lead to drastically different interpretations.
I believe Rotten Tomatoes has the Interstellar movie rated at a 72%.
72???
The disrespect!
Anything lower than a 99% is outright blasphemy.
But hey, that’s just me.
I’m biased towards space movies because I am curious regarding space.
Back to the initial critics who were shitting on Squid Games.
I think some of them were being creatively honest.
I think others were pandering to an algorithm.
They saw that others were talking about the show.
-Demand.
They saw that others were talking highly of the show.
-General consensus.
So a part of them wanted to be different or ‘edgy’ & decided to change it up with controversial post.
And some of the others probably didn’t even watch they show!
They love self improvement so much that the mere idea of watching any form of entertainment is ridiculous to them.
However, they still wanted to put in their 2 cents to let others know they had something to say on the matter.
There are too many components to count.
I never know what behind the scenes motives were present when these critics formed their opinion.
Therefore, I rely on my own judgment.
The less of a group thinker you are, the more you can perceive deeper dimensions in creative works.
