Why Mood Swings Are More Common Than You Think
The following post is from Tough Love: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
A couple of years back, I met David Bautista.
A wrestler & actor.
This is when he had just finished Guardians of Galaxy, which was a box office hit.
So, Bautista was a high in demand celebrity.
I went to the mall to pick up a new phone case.
As I walked past the Boys 2 Men barbershop, I see this BIG dude sitting on the chair getting a haircut.
He looked like a Bautista, but I couldn’t tell.
I asked one of the barbers who was on his break, if it was the wrestler?
The barber said, ‘yea dawg.’
I was about to go in and ask for a picture… and the barber stops me. He said:
‘If you really want a picture, wait till he is fully done with the haircut. For these celebrities, their haircut is their only free time.’
I thought this was common sense.
How could I have been so stupid to interrupt this sacred moment?
For most of my life, I rarely met celebrities.
But the WWE was something I watched growing up.
It was a fan moment.
Once he was done with his haircut, I asked him for a pic.
He agreed.
Once the picture went live on IG, one of my close friends DM’d me and asked:
‘Bautista actually took a picture with you?? He refused when I asked!’
No way.
This guy was so nice.
Why would he have been cold to my friend?
Hm…
Well, as I heard my friend’s story, it made full sense!
My friend asked for a picture while Bautista was holding his niece at a graduation.
Bautista found that a little disrespectful.
Mind you, I am going by what my friend said.
So it’s only getting one part of the story.
That made full sense.
If I was a celebrity, I wouldn’t want some random dude coming to me while I’m holding a child.
A level of defensiveness is perfectly understandable.
The point of this story is that my friend and I got 2 completely different EXPERIENCES of Bautista.
In my world, the dude was chill as fuck.
In my friend’s world, the dude was mean as fuck.
This goes on to show the human elements of celebrities & people that we see on the big screen.
We only get a fragment of who they are. The character they play for entertainment. This surface-level understanding causes us to subtract their array of moods.
The same person you are in the morning is rarely the same person that you are in the evening.
- In the morning, you are a go getter full of energy.
- In the evening, you’re looking for an escape plan.
When you factor the emotional element of humans, you become more patient.
This allows you to see the bigger picture.
My friend understands Bautista’s perspective more after his wedding.
During his wedding day, he had to keep saying hi to SOO many people…
But he could not say hi to everyone.
The people he didn’t say hi to?
They were mad.
They traveled from all parts of the U.S (and the world).
And they can’t even get a hi?
That’s when my friend completely understood Bautista’s mood.
It finally clicked.
Moods are a part of life.
People have moods.
Mother nature has moods.
When looking closely enough, wins & losses have an element of moods too.
