Why I Changed My Mind on LinkedIn
The following post is from Full Circle: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
Recently, I have been getting my assistant to upload my blogs onto LinkedIn.
I thought:
‘Eh, why not? It will lead to more traffic & book sales.’
I don’t check LinkedIn often.
So, when I checked it after a long time, I saw that my inbox was flooded.
There was a guy who messaged me saying that he was reading my book and thought it would be cool to connect with me.
The main thing I promote on my books is my website, www.armanitalks.com
But I noticed a few people found me on LinkedIn and messaged me there.
Another thing I noticed was that one of my old school fraternity brothers messaged me.
He was in a different school than me.
Whenever he’d visit USF, he’d always be filled with jokes.
I knew him as a very informal guy.
However, the way that he messaged me on LinkedIn was very formal.
‘Hello, Arman.’
Hello, Arman?
Bro, when do you say ‘hello’??
I’ve only heard you say, ‘yoooo madafucka!!’ before.
It’s like LinkedIn unlocked an inner formality in him.
I thought that was funny.
One reason I was never a fan of LinkedIn was because I thought it was a platform that encouraged people to be fake.
But my opinion was misguided.
LinkedIn has a specific role in the social media ecosystem:
- It attracts professionals who behave like professionals.
And formality is the side effect of carrying yourself in a respectable manner.
It was not right of me to label them as fake.
I’m excited to learn more about LinkedIn.
I rarely logged into the platform in the past few years.
But nowadays, I check it more often.
