The Terrifying Power of the Kardashians’ Influence on Society
The following post is from Full Circle: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
I have been noticing this bizarre trend as of late.
There are a lot of Desi’s moving here from overseas.
And they seem like a carbon copy of each other.
They post a lot of selfies.
I mean A LOTTTTT.
Are glammed up.
And in their selfies, they are making these ridiculous faces.
What gives?
To me, it looks like they watched Keeping up with the Kardashians on repeat.
They created a perception map of what it means to be a Westerner.
Now they came to the West acting like this.
Like them or hate them, the Kardashians have tremendous influence.
Why though?
Why can’t they just go away?
I believe their relevance will make a lot of sense if you understand basic network theory.
Networks work differently from industrial based rules.
In the industrial, scarcity is value.
While with networks, abundance is value.
For example…
If you could find gold anywhere, then the value will plummet.
The scarcity determines its value.
But let’s think about a network (an interconnection of parts).
Was the first ever fax machine valuable?
Not really.
You couldn’t do much with it.
But what about the 2nd fax machine?
Yes, it made the network more valuable.
Because 2 fax machines could talk and send messages to each other!
What about the 50th fax machine?
The network grows in value because more interconnections are made.
With networks, each added node (point of connection) leads to more possibilities.
And the possibilities dictate the value.
‘Alright Armani, what the hell do fax machines and the Kardashians have to do with each other?’
With the Kardashians, each of them are nodes.
They have their own stories.
Their own social circle.
Their own drama.
And when one grows powerful, their entire brand grows powerful.
Kim Kardashian initially hit the national spotlight after having a sextape with Ray J.
If she was by herself, she would be lucky to be relevant for 2 years.
But she wasn’t by herself.
She was bringing a clan with her.
Relevance goes up and down like waves.
You’re hot for a while and you’re cold for a while.
Once Kim is not relevant for some time, someone from her clan becomes relevant.
This keeps a spotlight on the entire network of the Kardashian brand.
Simulation…
When Kim Kardashian is not relevant, Bruce Jenner transitions into a woman and becomes relevant.
The Kardashian name is kept alive.
When Bruce Jenner is not relevant, Kylie Jenner becomes a billionaire.
The network is kept alive.
When Kylie is not relevant, Kanye West is making social media posts talking about how he wasn’t invited to the family birthday party.
The network is kept alive.
They have had a massive influence on how a group of people view plastic surgery, social media usage, relationships, business and much more.
And after seeing these Desi’s from the East coming to the West acting this way, I’m pretty sure once the Kardashians lose relevance in the US (if they do) their reign may just be beginning outside the US.
But here’s the twist.
Just like a network can soar to staggering heights.
A network can also be handed a humiliating defeat.
Only time will tell how the Kardashian story ends.
