New Media vs Traditional Media

Congratulations.

This is the golden era of media.

And you are in it.

However, due to the lack of knowledge, we miss out on a lot of opportunities.

We have no clue when something great is staring at us.

There are 2 kinds of media out there:

  • Traditional Media.
  • New Media.

Traditional media was when large corporations & businesses had control over information.

New media is the narrative that is able to be formed on the internet.

In this blog, you are going to learn the art of no longer being unaware.

You, my friend, are going to improve your media literacy.

You are going to be able to spot media opportunities, spot media nuances, and who knows…

Maybe become a creator in this world…

What is Media?

There are different forms of communication out there:

-Self-awareness

Conversation with one person

-Conversation in group

-Public Speaking

-Communication + Technology

When the communication and technology world meets, you get mass communications.

Mass communication is when you are able to communicate a message to a group of people despite the geographic location.

So for example…

With public speaking, you are talking to an audience who is in one area.

But let’s say you get that speech & post it on YouTube.

Now, your speech can be viewed by different people around the world.

Geographic locations have been broken down.

All forms of media exist as some sort of mass communication.

The message meets technology.

The range of how far the message travels depends on the type of media.

If it’s your local newspaper, then the message travels in the local area.

If it’s a YouTube channel like I mentioned earlier, the message can travel globally.

What is Traditional Media?

Traditional media is the type of media that mainly uses analog technology.

And you may be familiar with this in your day to day life.

Analog technology uses waves, rather than digital bits.

So an example is a radio.

We’ve all had that moment when we were enjoying a nice song on the radio.

But when we traveled past a certain distance, the station got staticky.

Why?

Because we left the area of the analog waves.

The transmitter no longer connected with the reciever.

Television, radio, and newspapers are forms of traditional media.

And many forms of traditional media have been around for ages.

1, 5, 10, 50 years, or more.

They have a lot of brand authority.

What is New Media?

New media is the type of content that is hosted on Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 is the level up of the internet.

When the internet was first a thing, most people entered the landscape as consumers.

They would use their dial-up internet, read blogs, get a few good laughs, consume some news & call it a day.

But with web 2.0, the internet transformed from a place where people just consume…

To now creating.

The Pro-Sumer was born.

A blend of producer with the consumer.

Also, new media functions off digital technology.

Where a message is converted into bits.

1’s & 0’s.

There are 3 components that make up new media:

-Communication skills (writing, speaking).

-Information technology (convert the message into bits, 1s & 0s).

-Communications technology (Share bits around the world).

Examples of new media include social media, blogs, YouTube & podcasts.

Traditional Media vs New Media: Which is Better?

Traditional media VS new media.

Us humans often love comparing things.

So, which one is better?

Well, in this context, that’s the incorrect question.

‘Why? Lol.’

Because although both are forms of media, they are different breeds.

We want to avoid comparing too much because it can lead to a blurry understanding of each one’s unique landscape.

In order to have media literacy, we want to avoid the comparison game & just understand.

Traditional media often has a higher budget & an army working for them.

You’ll see news anchors, technicians, cameramen, businessmen, ad agencies, etc.

And a lot of traditional media has been around for a long time.

You can picture a BIG ship carrying a lot of people.

On the flip side, for new media, you can picture a speedboat.

Extremely dynamic and easy to turn around.

But there is not as much of a budget.

New media creators are often bootstrapping when getting started.

They are often individuals or small groups.

In the beginning, don’t expect high-quality production.

Just expect good storytelling & information.

As time goes on by, the new media creators can scale.

Which One Is Right for You?

Both worlds have great career opportunities.

Although the 2 worlds have different paths.

If you want a role in the traditional media world, it’s often recommended you have some sort of degree in communications, media, journalism, etc.

And you can even get an internship and mentor.

In this world, most people are formally trained.

On the flip side, for the new media world, the game is about getting started.

Formal education is not what you need.

‘Then what do I need?’

You need reps.

If you want to do YouTube.

Do YouTube.

If you want to talk.

Then start a podcast.

Blog?

Write.

The less talking & the more moving, the better.

Ask yourself, which temperament seems right for you.

Do you want some formal education?

Do you want to be part of a ship?

Or do you want to just begin asap & learn along the way?

There is no wrong or right answer.

It all depends on what you desire.

Choosing Your Path

Not everyone wants to be a Pro-Sumer.

And that’s all good.

Don’t do it if you don’t want to.

But if a part of you wants to be an active participant of the media landscape, now is the best time.

There has never been a better time in human history to get involved in media.

The average human consumes at least 5 hours of media a day.

And that’s me underestimating.

Billions of people all around the planet are on some form of traditional & new media.

So the question is…

How bad do you want to get your message out there?

Your response will dictate if you blend the world of communication skills & technology to become a powerhouse in this new landscape.
