My Review of The Woman in the Yard
Recently, I watched this scary movie called The Woman in the Yard.
I had been waiting for it for a while because it felt like nothing good was coming out in AMC theaters for a long time.
I was ready to see something that at least caught my attention.
I hadn’t seen a scary movie in a while, so I was excited to finally watch something new.
The cool thing about The Woman in the Yard is that it was scary, kind of.
It had its ups and downs, but overall, it was a different type of scary.
It wasn’t like those classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies where you’re just terrified the whole time.
This one had a dramatic feel, with sudden bursts of scariness that kept you on your toes.
Here’s my honest take on it…
The Positives
First off, I was entertained.
I’m one of those people who can be really forgiving with a film as long as it keeps me entertained.
It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece with a mind-blowing plot, but if I’m watching and the time flies by, that’s a win for me.
And that’s one thing The Woman in the Yard nailed.
It was surprisingly entertaining!
What also stood out to me was the simplicity of the cast.
There were probably only four or five characters in the whole movie.
I’ve been noticing that a lot lately…films with minimal characters and a really crisp storyline.
It makes the movie easier to follow, and you don’t have to juggle a bunch of different backstories.
That worked well here.
And yes, it had some scary moments.
It wasn’t the typical haunted house or serial killer kind of scary.
It had a unique vibe.
The outdoor setting was unsettling, and then there was this one creepy lady who you had no clue about.
Why she was there & why she wouldn’t leave.
That mystery added to the eerie feeling of it all.
The Flaws
Now let’s talk about the flaws.
Spoiler alert, just in case.
One thing I didn’t like was when they showed the Woman in the Yard’s face.
I was really into the movie when her face was covered.
My imagination was running wild, and that mystery kept me engaged.
But the second they revealed her face, it kind of killed that suspense for me.
I preferred the sense of the unknown.
It was way creepier.
Another issue I had was with the ending.
I don’t mind being confused during the middle or even the beginning of a movie, but I really don’t like ending a movie confused.
I’m not the type who enjoys diving into Reddit threads and fan theories just to make sense of what I just watched.
So yeah, I wasn’t a big fan of how they wrapped things up.
Also, there were a few scenes that were just gross, not scary.
And to me, there’s a big difference between horror and just gore.
Scary is when you’re emotionally invested and disturbed by what’s happening.
Gross is when you’re just squirming at blood and guts.
Some directors seem to confuse the two, and this movie leaned into that at times.
I felt like they missed some opportunities to go deeper with the horror and leaned too much into the “shock” factor instead.
My Rating
So, what’s my final rating?
it’s a solid 6.8.
It’s a fun movie to check out, maybe even with your family if they’re into scary stuff.
It’s probably not the kind of movie you’ll rewatch every couple of years, but it’s worth seeing once.
It fits into this new wave of films we’re seeing:
- Roughly 90 minutes, a small cast, one main plot, and a slightly ambiguous ending.
In some ways, it reminded me of The Presence.
Not in storyline, but in structure.
I’d say The Woman in the Yard was like a less refined version of The Presence.
Still, it had a lot going for it.
I think it could’ve been better by leaning more into imagination and tightening up the storyline.
But the acting was phenomenal.
I really felt like I was going through the same pain as the characters.
That says a lot.
So overall, good job.
Who knows, maybe you’ll rate it higher than I did.
