Increase Conversation Skills like Joe Rogan

Joe Rogan is a renaissance man of sorts.

He’s into fitness.

Does color commentary.

Hosted TV shows.

Nowadays, he runs a famous podcast known as the Joe Rogan Experience.

He’s interviewed plenty of high-quality guests.

And he manages to hold his own in the dialogue.

Joe has mastered the art of conversation.

Actually, let me take that back.

He is continuing to master the art of conversation.

What are a few things that make Joe Rogan great at conversations?

In this article, I’ll break down a few traits that I’ve noticed.

Being Knowledgeable on Multiple Topics

Do you know any one-trick ponies?

They have a passion they can talk about for hours.

But other than that, they are lifeless.

Are you a one-trick pony?

The antidote to this sad characteristic is being knowledgeable in multiple fields.

‘What if I’m not interested in multiple fields?’

I believe you should still somewhat be aware.

That doesn’t mean obsessing over it.

But know some basic lingo from the field.

This allows you to be a social chameleon.

Joe Rogan is great at talking to a variety of people because he knows about a variety of things.

If Joe wasn’t well versed in a variety of fields, then he wouldn’t be able to keep up in his own show.

‘What if he doesn’t know much about a topic that was bought up?’

Great question…

The Power of Questions

Every now and then, we will be introduced to a topic that we have:

-Minimal knowledge of.

-0 knowledge of.

The ego feels annoyed by this.

It doesn’t like not knowing something…

So the ego may be tempted to over-talk and put on false bravado.

This is a poor way to go about conversation skills.

The wiser strategy is to do what Joe does:

  • Ask questions.

Remember, there is no such thing as the perfect question.

There are only suitable questions.

Perfect questions will have you disengaged from the conversation while staying in your head.

While suitable questions will have you paying attention to the context of the conversation.

Curiosity is the engine that drives conversations.

If you lack curiosity, then you won’t have a variety of knowledge in your arsenal.

Nor will you be a good listener.

Be Okay with Disagreements

I’ve seen a handful of times when Joe got angry at a guest.

But for the most part, I’ve seen Joe be good at not personalizing disagreements.

Whenever a person disagrees with you, the ego is like:

‘Whoa, what’s up with this guy? Why are they attacking me?’

Often, the other person is not attacking you.

They are simply offering a different worldview.

This is where it can get tricky.

The person may disagree in a condescending tone.

But normally, this person doesn’t know any better.

A remarkable way to deal with rude people is to view them as ignorant.

When you view them as ignorant, their snobby attitude doesn’t get under your skin as much.

You remain present in the conversation.

Presence

Joe Rogan’s conversation skills come down to presence.

I noticed this trait when he was doing an episode with Naval Ravikant.

The 2 covered topics from:

  • Business, politics, happiness, and much more.

It’s difficult to weave through different topics when you keep planning what you’re going to say.

‘Why do people pre-plan what they are going to say in a conversation?’

Sometimes, it’s because they are nervous.

Other times, it’s because they have a false idea of what charisma is.

They think charisma is about getting others to like them.

But this strategy often fails.

It’s much better to get others to love themselves.

Put the focus on the other person first.

But we can easily get carried away with putting too much spotlight on the other person.

Don’t put so much focus on them that you’re a bystander!

When you give humans the opportunity to ramble, they will.

So, Joe doesn’t just put the spotlight on the other person and sit idle.

He knows how to chip in as well.

Practice a Ton

Joe has 1000s of episodes.

What does this mean?

It means you need to practice a ton, homie.

Conversation skills are a muscle that needs to be constantly worked out.

Each new person is a new data point.

Because no 2 people are the same.

Just because the last 11 convos went smoothly doesn’t mean the 12th one will.

And just because the last 11 convos went awful doesn’t mean the 12th one will.

Lesson?

Treat each convo as new!

Some conversations will go well.

It feels like you have known the other person your entire life.

While other times, the conversation feels dry.

Avoid pulling the plug on the conversation so fast.

Here’s a trick to dealing with boring people:

  • View boring people as nervous.

This mind hack makes you more patient!

As Joe continues to practice, he will get better with time.

The main person who can stop Joe is Joe.

Develop Joe Rogan-Like Conversation Skills

I recall when I first started my YouTube channel, every now and then, I would have a guest join me for an episode.

I had an entrepreneur, a public speaker, and a salesman as guests.

When they came on, I was like:

Now what?

Well, my YouTube channel dealt with communication skills.

So, let’s have these guests give their insights into communication from their respective fields.

A bodybuilder can teach you a lot about being charming.

Who would have thought?

You never know how a dialogue will unfold.

The Joe Rogan Experience has become so influential because it’s so unpredictable.

Joe has shown how far strategic use of new media, plus curiosity, and communication skills will take a person.
