If you check out social media, everyone seems to be a business mogul.
They make it look so easy:
“Just quit your job, hustle, and build the life of your dreams.”
But is it really that simple?
Not quite.
There’s a big difference between building a side hustle and building a business.
A side hustle can create some opportunities for you.
It might help you buy more food, purchase supplies, or occasionally pay your rent.
A business, on the other hand, is capable of providing for you, your family, and even the world.
Building a business takes time, effort, and money.
The Nature of Building a Business
Businesses are complex systems.
You’re constantly working on them, and in the beginning, they don’t make much money.
In fact, you might be losing money…especially if you’re creating a new market.
Innovative ideas like social media platforms, smartphones, or new software take a lot of investment in talent, services, and products.
To fund this, you’ll need money.
But where does the money come from?
How to Get Money
Money is typically obtained in two ethical ways:
- Asking for it
- Earning it
Asking for Money
This involves approaching investors such as venture capitalists, angel investors, or banks.
To increase your chances, you need a clear business plan, a strategy for providing returns, and a roadmap for scaling your business.
Earning Money
This can be achieved through:
- Getting a Job: Working for a company in exchange for a salary.
- Gig Work: Doing jobs like Uber, DoorDash, or Uber Eats.
- Freelancing: Completing projects such as proofreading, building websites, or graphic design.
Is Having a Job Weak?
I recently heard about a guy who worked as an Uber driver.
His date cut the date short because she didn’t want to date an Uber driver.
What she didn’t understand was that he wasn’t “just” an Uber driver.
He was driving to fund his business.
There’s honor in ethically earning money to invest in your goals.
Many people resort to unethical means, but this guy chose the high road.
Our bills don’t stop just because we started a business.
Sometimes, having a stable job or a gig is the most responsible way to fund your dreams.
Geography Will Influence Your Path
Where you live can influence how you fund your business.
- In Silicon Valley, you’ll find investors everywhere, making pitching a common strategy.
- In other places, like Florida, investors might not be as accessible. You may need to take a job or freelance to fund your business.
It’s important to be realistic.
Your location, financial situation, and responsibilities all play a role.
My Strategy
A few years ago, I focused entirely on my venture, ArmaniTalks.
It was growing, but the profit I earned went toward taxes, living expenses, and reinvesting in the business.
Eventually, I accepted a six-figure job as an engineer at a bank.
This job allowed me to:

At the same time, I reinvested my extra income into ArmaniTalks.
Finding the path that works for you depends on your goals, skills, and circumstances.
Whether it’s a job, freelancing, or pitching to investors, there’s no shame in taking a practical approach to fund your business.
Be realistic about your geography, your dreams, and your responsibilities.
Quit listening to social media narratives that glorify quitting your job without a plan.
Dream big.
But balance it with practicality.
