Imagination Economy: What is it & What Does it Mean for You?

The Following Post is from the ArmaniTalks Newsletter

Imagine it is 5,000 years from now.

All the continents have been connected with roads.

Humans have high-speed cars that can drive at the speed of light.

One more thing…

Aliens have landed on the planet.

These aliens are not dangerous.

They are quite friendly.

However, they are not smart….yet.

The government passes legislation to give these aliens more work to better fit into civilization.

The DriveBuddy program is introduced.

Aliens are meant to give you directions on the road.

As you drive these high-speed cars around the planet, the aliens read off the GPS.

You are not allowed to look at the GPS.

If you look at the GPS, then you will be fined.

The government is serious about training these aliens!

As you drive from Asia to North America, you discover your alien is a dummy.

The alien:

  • Speaks slow – This causes you to miss exits.
  • Mumbles – This causes you to drive in angst.
  • Has poor timing – This causes you to take abrupt turns.

Many people get annoyed that they’re being forced to use the aliens.

These fed up citizens rally against the government to go back to their old way of living.

The government complies.

Nowadays, it is optional to use aliens as the GPS.

Many quickly discard these aliens.

But for some reason, you think:

‘I have a good feeling about my alien.’

You’re patient with the alien and slowly train it.

Others ridicule you for not giving up this dummy.

But you ignore the naysayers and give your buddy more work.

Your faith is fruitful.

Slowly….the alien becomes smarter.

The filler words fall off.

Speaking pace sharpens.

Enunciation becomes clear.

Also, the alien learns to read body language.

It can tell when you’re hungry, when you need a restroom break, when you need cruise mode activated etc.

Eventually, the alien can read you like a book.

It has tapped into your mind and will suggest GPS locations 2-steps ahead.

As the alien becomes smarter and smarter, you’re capable of driving faster and faster!!!!

You are now moving at the speed of thought.

This ties in beautifully with the imagination economy.

A lot of work that we used to do with our limbs are being automated to computers.

Unless we have a general understanding of history, we will not be able to spot this moment in our history.

If you were an ambitious teenager in the 60s, you’d go to your local newspaper mogul and say:

‘Sir, I would like a paper route.’

The mogul would give you a paper route where you distributed newspapers to homes.

Fast forward 63 years.

I see something similar with the ArmaniTalks newsletter in the year 2023.

This newsletter is my form of newspaper.

But rather than hiring paperboys, I simply click a ‘broadcast’ button.

That ‘broadcast’ button is equivalent to me hiring 1000s of paperboys to distribute my newspaper around the planet.

Rather than spending time doing salary negotiations with the paperboys, assigning them routes, settling conflicts…

I gain back time to use my imagination.

Since the 1960s -> 2020s, a lot of barriers are disappearing before our very eyes.

Before, if you wanted to code, you had to manually put holes in cards.

If you wanted to edit a film, you’d have to pull out scissors and cut the frame that you did not want.

A lot of barriers.

Nowadays, that’s not the case.

Coding and editing can happen with a few strategic clicks and keystrokes.

If you want to get the most out of the imagination economy, a few things are needed:

  • Imagination and a grasp of technology.

But let’s say you’re like:

‘Fam, I’m an imaginative person, but I’m not trying to stay updated with technology.’

Then you need to have crystal clear communication skills (and money, but that’s a talk for another time lol).

There are millions of people who are subject matter experts in the technology that you need.

But they don’t know what to do with the tech.

Your imagination gives them direction.

You need to transfer your imagination into someone else’s mind.

They can’t see what you’re seeing.

So, allow them to see it.

You can’t just be like:

‘Figure it out, dammit!’

That works in movies, but not in the real world.

Learning to articulate your imagination is a skill.

And this skill is learned thru practice.

A lifelong coder once said:

‘It has dawned on me recently that if you can write expository essays, then you can code.’

All I heard was:

‘If you can master soft skills, then you can master hard skills.’

Society teaches you the opposite.

They pound the hard skills into curriculums and hope you stumble into soft skills.

The same awe that we looked at computers with in the 70s, 80s, and 90s….

Is going to be the same awe that we look at ourselves with in 2020+.

In the imagination economy, we’re going to see how far we can push ourselves.

How to play the instrument of our voice, how to visualize, how to convert imagination into words.

And we aren’t going to do this is a willy nilly sort of way.

We are going to do this in a scientific way.

With logic, frameworks, repeatability, and evidence.

This is a glimpse into the imagination economy.

Before, our computers were dumb.

It would only do what we told it to.

But lately, computers are becoming smart.

This allows us to free up busy work and learn more about ourselves.

The alien that was in our passenger seat is slowly getting smarter and smarter….

This allows us to move faster and faster.

Some would say… at the speed of thought.
