How Your Attitude Impacts Everyone Around You
The following post is from EPIC: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
Ageism is defined as:
“Prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person’s age.”
Often, when I used to think of ageism, I thought of discrimination towards an elderly person.
A young person probably said:
‘What can Sue do? She’s too old!’
But I’ve noticed a reverse too.
Where young people are discriminated against in certain fields.
‘What could this young fella possibly know? He has barely hit puberty!’
While this young fellow is 25 years old.
Not too old.
But not too young either.
Young people often have an awkward transition period in corporate life.
Where the young buck is figuring out how to add value in a professional setting.
I’m not going to talk about others.
But I’ll talk about my experience in corporate life.
I’ve worked in a variety of different fields.
Aerospace, IT & the finance departments.
What I saw was surprising.
‘What was that?’
Walking zombies.
Tons of workers who have been in a company for a long time hated it.
They lacked enthusiasm.
The highlight of their day was to gather around one another & gossip.
Often, the only way to bond with these folks was to gossip yourself.
But what if you didn’t want to gossip?
Then the potential subject matters to converse about would drastically reduce.
This is where primal value comes in clutch.
Enthusiasm.
A person with a ‘can do’ attitude is a Rockstar.
Others want to see what the hype is about.
Why is this person so enthusiastic for??
A large part of being enthusiastic is being self motivated.
Because when you look around you, most individuals don’t have that fire.
That’s not a personal attack.
It is what it is.
The enthusiastic spirit is capable of keeping the spirits high DESPITE the environment.
If this person is looking at the environment to feel fire, then they will become volatile.
The volatility will make them jaded over time.
Therefore, there needs to be SOMETHING that’s causing the inner fire to be lit.
And that ‘something’ is best kept a secret.
Having that 1 secret to yourself never hurts.
Be giving with other types information, sure.
But have at least 1 thing solely for yourself.
It’s great when this secret is empowering rather than draining.
A draining secret is one where you killed someone before, but got away with it.
Even if you never tell someone else, your gloomy face will imply something suspect.
An empowering secret is a vision that you’re taking incremental steps towards.
Even if you never tell someone else, your face will have a glow to it.
That’s the way of an enthusiastic spirit.
This is primal value that adds life to a floor of walking zombies.
