How to Use DMs on Social Media to Build Meaningful Connections
The following post is from Tough Love: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
You ever heard of attraction networking?
‘Nah, what is that?’
It’s when you provide value & others come to you. They become magnetized, aka, attracted.
‘Wow! How can I do that?’
By leveling up.
Picture a karate expert. You think they just have kicks?
‘Nah.’
Then what do they have?
‘They have kicks, punches, defense moves, take downs, etc.’
Correct, they are multifaceted.
Attraction networking is a part of being multifaceted in networking.
However, it will only happen with consistency.
Before you attract, you must be proactive.
The DM (direct message) is a weapon on the internet.
It is an amazing way to forge relationships.
I remember when I was just starting on Twitter, I jumped into Western Mastery’s DM.
Had engaged with him a few times & thought, eh why not.
At the time, I had 80 followers and he had 8000.
Colossal difference.
But dude was humble.
He gave me tips, ideas & answered questions.
And he took it one level further.
He even opened his website so I could do a guest blog.
At the time, a big account putting his name behind mine gave me some credibility.
It gave me the opportunity to be taken seriously.
All that happened, because I said, ‘fuck it, I’m going to DM him.’
It was a case of being proactive.
And being proactive helped build a social opportunity out of thin air.
For the next few weeks, I decided to hop in more DMs.
Not to ask for anything.
But just to tell someone when I admired their work.
This was a good way to build relationships behind the scenes.
As my account grew, something changed.
Rather than being proactive a lot, I was beginning to attract.
Now I had DMs from others.
Small and MASSIVE accounts.
It was an added move in the karate arsenal.
Attraction networking.
This isn’t to brag or anything like that.
But to tell you that social media is meant to be used for being social.
Stunning insight, right?
Big accounts may not get back to you because they are flooded, but at least you tried.
Who knows, they may get back to you like Western Mastery got back to me.
You ever heard that life is a game of shaking the right hands.
‘I have.’
Well, guess what?
On social media, it’s a game of tapping into the right minds.
Too many people use social media for nonsense nowadays.
I know because I used to be one of them.
Your boy was watching WorldStar, following DaQuan memes & watching funny YouTube videos.
However, that time has passed.
This is the golden era of information.
There is a time for play, sure. But there is also a time to take care of business.
The ability to navigate around the DM tests digital social skills.
Add this move into your arsenal.
Expand the karate moves.
Soon, others will be attracted to you like a magnet.
