How to Get Rid of a Nasal Voice

 

A nasal voice hurts your head.

‘But what can I do? My voice is fixed, right?

Nope, wrong.

 

Chances are that you’re speaking too much from the head.

With a simple exercise, you can reduce the nasal voice and speak in a much smoother tone.

 

Allow me to share why speaking from the heart is not just a metaphorical phrase.

It’s meant to be taken literally.

 

Exercise on Attention

 

I want you to take some time and bring focus to your right shoulder.

To get the most out of this exercise, use a timer.

Set the timer for 3 minutes and bring as much attention to your right shoulder as possible.

 

Get detailed.

More detailed.

Even more detailed, bud.

 

You should feel every tingling sensation in the right shoulder.

Am I making sense?

‘You are making sense, Armani. But why am I doing this again??’

You’ll see why shortly.

 

Once the 3 minutes are up, say hello.

What did you notice with your voice?

‘I noticed that my voice came out from the direction that I was putting my attention on.’

Exactly! The voice came from the right side of your throat.

 

Your voice follows where your attention mainly is.

 

Head Communicator

 

When you think of speaking, what do you think of?

‘I think of words.’

What else?

‘I think of a head talking.’

BOOM.

Say that again.

‘I think of a head talking.’

Exactly.

You think of a head.

 

This leads you to mainly associate speaking with the head.

And remember:

Your voice follows where your attention mainly is.

 

This causes you to subconsciously focus a lot on your head when you are communicating.

A nasal voice is when your voice is predominately from the nasal passage.

Aka: your nose area.

Your nose is a part of your face….which is on your head.

 

Our goal is to transition our attention.

From head to the body.

 

Body Communicator

 

The voice does not just come from the head.

Instead, it comes from the entire body.

 

Say a word and touch the tip of your finger.

You’ll feel a subtle vibration at the tip of your finger!

This allows you to see that the voice comes from all over the body.

 

‘So, what am I supposed to do? Focus on my entire body when I talk?’

Nah, you don’t have to do that.

Instead, center yourself on the heart.

 

The head is not too generous.

It takes the voice and doesn’t share it with the entire body.

It’s greedy like that.

 

However, when you center your attention on the heart, you’ll notice the exact opposite effect.

The heart is very generous.

 

When you focus on the heart, it spreads the energy fairly throughout the entire body.

This allows for a well-balanced speaking voice.

 

Therefore, when you focus on the heart, you end up focusing on the entire body.

As you focus on the entire body, you learn how to get rid of a nasal voice.

 

Exercise to Fix Nasal Voice

 

 

In the earlier part of the blog, I shared how your voice goes where your attention resides.

Then I shared how most people’s perception of speaking is head centered.

A head-centered speaking approach leads to a nasal voice.

 

Our goal is to make it heart-centered.

By focusing on the heart, we will cultivate a warmer voice.

 

Set a timer for 3 minutes.

Within those 3 minutes, focus on the heart.

Feel the sensations.

You’ll sense the heart rhythmically beating.

 

Keep bringing more attention to it.

More…

A bit more…

 

Once the 3 minutes are up, say hello.

 

How was it?

‘Wow, it was much less nasally!’

 

So, the saying:

Speak from the heart.

Is not only a metaphorical saying.

It is meant to be taken literally as well.

 

How to Become Situated in the Heart

 

It’s a game of repetition.

The more you practice taking time to center yourself on the heart, the more it becomes autopilot.

 

Let’s say you have a YouTube video that you have to record.

You can spend 30 seconds to 3 minutes bringing conscious awareness to your heart before you record.

This can become a standard practice over time.

 

Let’s say you have a speech coming up.

You can take 30 seconds to 3 minutes to bring conscious awareness to your heart as the host is about to call on you.

 

With the speech example, a large reason speech anxiety happens is because the speaker is thinking too much.

They are rehearsing more in their head to ensure they don’t forget a point.

The more you stay in your head, the more you increase your likelihood of forgetting a point.

 

Instead, focus your attention on your body.

More specifically, focus on the heart.

 

This strategy takes you out of your head and places you in your body.

Now, you feel more centered on the stage.

The speech just flows out of you!

 

There are multiple ways to practice focusing on the heart.

I’ll let you figure out a schedule that works for you.

 

Building a Smooth Speaking Voice

 

A great speaking voice does not mean a deep voice.

It means a congruent voice.

 

A voice where you have conviction behind your words.

 

This type of voice just flows.

It doesn’t leave your head aching after you’re done with your talk.

 

Also, fixing the nasal voice allows your message to be digested better by others.

It’ll be a damn shame if you have a great message that is drowned out by a suboptimal delivery.

 

Therefore, speak from the heart, my friend.

Both literally and figuratively…
