How to Focus Better by Leveraging Emotions

How to Focus Better

There are different paths to build focus.

It’s highly dependent on the personality type.

What works great for one person may fall flat for someone else.

And vice versa is true.

Yet, we have been approaching focus with a one size fits all attitude.

That may explain why focus levels are so shit nowadays.

In this article, we are going to hit the topic of focus from a nuanced approach.

Our personality type is going to be the leading factor for the actions we take.

It’s our internal world that will determine our internal states.

What is the King of Focus?

We act as though focus is only a game of the mind.

And oftentimes, we may even delve deeper and say it’s only a game of the intellect.

BIG MISTAKE.

‘If it’s not a game of the intellect, then what is it a game of?’

It’s a game of emotions.

It doesn’t matter how smart you are…

If you can’t control your emotions, then focus will be impossible.

Even the best swimmer in the world knows they can’t swim against a tsunami.

Likewise, the smartest person should know that swimming against emotions is not strategic.

Rather than swimming against the emotions, work with them.

How to Direct Emotions

Emotions are like little children.

You need to coax your emotions to let them know that you’re on their side.

A lot of people get interested in focus & try meditation for 1 hour on their first session.

This overwhelms emotions.

Rather than doing that, adopt the:

-Curiosity approach.

-Micro approach.

Let’s go thru both.

Curiosity Approach

Imagine someone tells you that they heard gossip about you…

But they weren’t going to tell you what they heard.

This got your curiosity.

You want to know what is being said about you.

There is a STRONG desire.

Yet, this individual is stubbron.

They aren’t saying a word.

Well, as 2 months pass on by, they FINALLY decide to tell you.

They have a 30-minute story to share.

Once they share the story, you’ll be all ears.

You’ll be all focus.

This shows that when curiosity is activated, focus is a byproduct.

What does this mean for you?

Study subjects that you are naturally curious about.

PROVE to yourself that you are already capable of focusing.

This wins the emotions over.

Micro Approach

It’s better to meditate 1 minute every day rather than 1 hour out of the blue moon.

Micro is a big friend to the emotions.

Why?

Because micro doesn’t overwhelm the emotions.

Micro eases good habits into the world of energy.

So in order to pick up a micro approach to focus, identify what micro means to you.

Different situations will require different definitions of micro.

Whenever micro is involved, GET A TIMER.

Let’s say your room is messy as shit.

Give yourself 1 burst of 20 minutes of uninterrupted focus to clean the room.

Take a rest.

Now another 20 minutes.

Repeat until the room is polished.

During moments of the micro sessions, focus SOLELY on the task.

These micro sessions should feel like a game.

It should not make your head hurt.

Focus is a Skill

Curiosity & a micro-based approach (plus a timer) to productivity will get you ahead of the curve.

2 variables…

Not too difficult right?

We aren’t making it any more complicated than that.

While many humans immediately try working with the head…

Be better.

Work with the heart, the head will follow, guaranteed.

Humans are creatures of emotions first & they justify with logic later.

Flow with the tsunami, so the swimmer’s job becomes tensionless.

During the burst of leveraging curiosity & doing the micro approach, be highly present.

Be aware of what’s going on.

How does it feel to focus?

Understanding the physical sensations of our body gets us associating a positive emotion with focus.

It doesn’t feel like work.

Your emotions LOVE it when it hears something isn’t work.

Just like anything in life, focus works in exponential returns.

It’s a process of iteration.

The prior rep builds on the latter rep.

And the skillset of focus gradually increases over time.

Embodying Focus

Not only does focus compound over time..

Eventually, it becomes a mode of living.

There are 2 predominant states of the brain:

Default Mode Network: mind-wandering state.

Task Positive Network: focused state.

Most humans spend their time in default mode.

That’s because they practice that state the most.

Going from thought to thought.

By taking a mindful approach to building focus, we gradually start shifting to a task-positive network.

Our nervous system rewires when we constantly make ourselves aware of something.

Where attention flows, energy goes.

This is the beauty.

So keep practicing focus until you become focus.

That’s a beautiful state to be in.

A state of utmost presence.

Great spiritual teachers have said that there is no past or future.

The only time that has ever existed is the NOW.

Keep using bursts of focus thru curiosity & micro reps…

Until it becomes the main mode of living.

That’s working with your emotions to the tee.

Concentration is More than a Mere Act

We often confuse focus as being something that only works with productivity.

While in reality, that’s not remotely the case.

Focus is an aid for social skills, courage, emotional management…and productivity also happens to be on the list.

And still…I’m only scratching the surface.

So see how curiosity & micro reps can be leveraged in context to your life.

Curiosity is innate in us.

That’s the gut instinct for the mind.

Find out what you’re curious about & learn about it.

This shows you that you are already great at focusing.

As for the micro reps, break things down & use the timer.

The timer keeps ya on track & gets you thinking in micro -> macro reps.

The nervous system gradually becomes rewired to match our intentions.

Focus is a gift that all humans can get once we change our way of thinking.

Unlock it thru the art of repetition.

Matured focus is a new state of being.

That’s living in the present moment.
