When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudices and motivated by pride and vanity. – Dale Carnegie

This is a simple fact of life.

So the question is, how would you score your emotional intelligence? Is it something that you are strong with, or need some work with?

There are a few components of emotional intelligence. The following are:

4. Empathy
5. Social Skills

These 5 factors are key components to measuring emotional intelligence. So you have the components, what’s next? How do you measure your EQ?

There is no exam for your emotions.

This is something that you are going to be responsible for yourself.

The best way to work on your emotional intelligence is by learning the core principles of emotions and applying them directly to your internal world through introspection and self-awareness.

I want to share a few benefits that emotional intelligence will have on your life once you begin to take it seriously.

The Ability to Turn Negatives into Positives

The first major benefit is the ability to regulate your emotions. This is a very powerful skill to have handy in your everyday life.

Why? Emotional regulation is important because it allows you to morph negative energy into your favor, which can impact your day to day life.

Say you are feeling very angry after someone cut you off in traffic. You are now given a few options. Let’s list two of them:

1. You become very angry & begin to go in a road rage mode. During your road rage, your logical self has taken a backseat to your primal self. Your primal behavior may lead you to a dangerous car accident or a police ticket.

2. You realize that you are feeling angry, but you do not react to it. Rather, you take a few breaths in and out to cool off. Once you get home, you take your pre-workout and unleash that angry energy from earlier, onto the gym weights.

Which option sounds better to you?

Bottom line is that a firm grasp of emotional regulation will allow you to turn your negative emotions into productive emotions.

By doing this in a healthy manner, you will avoid exploding on someone, breaking something out of frustration, or damaging your immune system.

Believe it or not, your emotions absolutely have an effect on your health. A person who boils with anger does damage to their immune system. Therefore, not having a proper grasp of your emotions and impulses will lead to poor physical health.

This is where emotional intelligence comes in.

You will be able to identify your trigger spots in order to recognize the emotions that are on the verge of getting you upset.

With time, your in-depth understanding of your emotional triggers will allow you to avoid plenty of situations that could further damage your health.

Improved Social Relationships

One of the key components of forming meaningful relationships with people, is empathy. Empathy alone will allow you to connect with someone’s internal world.

This is a massive skill that can be applied globally. Eastern culture or Western culture, it does not matter.

Empathy is one of the building blocks of what it means to be human.

The dark emotions become amplified to a twisted level. Once the emotions are felt by the party, they stop and begin justifying their inability to take the stage with logic.

That is how most of the problems in your life are born. You have a strong emotion that terrifies you and then you follow it up with a logical explanation to feed your ego.

But the main problem with this strategy is that you are holding yourself back. With a proper level of emotional intelligence, you will be able to identify the emotions being felt without reacting in a rash manner.

You will develop the ability to channel those terrifying emotions into your favor. Once you are able to channel those emotions, you become unstoppable and fear officially becomes an illusion.

You will begin to make it a habit to leave your comfort zone. Only then will you see yourself grow.

What is the point of living if you are not happy? This is a serious question. Many human beings submerge themselves into a sad, anxiety and anger-riddled life and they do not even know it.

Everyone wants to be happy. But how many people make the conscious effort to become happy?

Not many.

Emotional intelligence is the key to happiness. EQ alone will allow you to master your emotions rather than being mastered by your emotions.

Once you gain full grasp of your internal world, you will notice something magnificent. You will begin to feel a level of control that you always felt was missing.

This level of control will bring a sense of joy like no other. But the first step to getting that control is understanding how your internal world works inside and out.

The only way you will be able to do that is by going on a journey to becoming emotionally intelligent.

Time to Make a Decision That Can Alter Your Life

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but here it goes: Life will not get any easier.

Honest truth? Life will only get more difficult.

So what is the solution? Well if life gets more difficult, then you must become stronger. And I do not only mean becoming stronger in a physical sense.

I mean becoming stronger in an emotional sense.

You need to start toughening up your skin. Start guarding your internal world and make the efforts to strengthen it.

Once you are able to grasp full control over the different emotions within you. Once you do that, a tough life no longer scares you. That is because you are becoming tougher as well.

The journey will require you to work hard. But begin mastering your internal world now, so you are able to have the external world of your dreams.
