Beat Perfectionism Anxiety & Become a DOER!

Beat Perfectionism Anxiety & Become a DOER!

This is the era where more people have the resources to become creators.

Therefore, many people are stepping up.

With the ease of access to platforms, people are now becoming:

  • Bloggers.
  • YouTubers.
  • Podcasters.
  • Talk show hosts.
  • Citizen journalists.
  • Writers and much more.

Then there is you.

Standing on the sidelines.

‘No, you’re wrong. I’m working on something!’

How long have you been working on it?

‘Uh… for a long time.’

When do you plan to publish it?

‘Uh… soon, I promise!’

Yea, right.

You suffer from perfectionism, my friend.

This is causing anxiety.

Perfectionism is no badge of honor.

When you look beyond the layers, there is fear.

Defining Perfectionism

Perfectionism is wanting the product to be perfect before bringing attention to it.

‘Is this mindset destructive?

Not for all fields.

For some fields, I want the person to have a perfectionist mentality.

‘Like?’

Like, whoever builds planes. Take all the time you need!

On the other hand, for creative fields, a perfectionist mindset leads to implosion.

This is when the creator is overthinking the little details.

It wouldn’t matter if they were a perfectionist who published anyways.

However, perfectionism without publishing leads to anxiety.

By the way, this mindset doesn’t only apply to content creation.

This is a personality trait in general.

And this personality trait can spill over to other parts of life.

Why Perfectionism Exists

The reason perfectionism exists is due to fear.

‘Fear?? I’m not scared. Seriously, I’m just taking the time to put out good material.’

It starts off as a noble goal.

However, if you have been over-optimizing, then fear is in your heart.

A perfectionist mind works like this:

‘Let me notice all the flaws someone else will notice about my material. Then I will fix that, so they don’t notice my flaws and bring it up in public.’

A perfectionist’s worst nightmare is being noticed on a flaw that they were aware of.

It’s like a YouTuber who recorded the “perfect” video.

However, for one scene, there was a fly caught resting on the YouTuber’s face.

He doesn’t know much about video graphic design to get rid of the fly.

So, what does he do?

He makes the executive decision to upload.

There are tons of people who comment on how insightful the video was.

However, there was one person who said:

‘Check out 3:45! A fly is on Matt’s face lmao.’

Matt, the perfectionist, is livid & sad because he could have prevented this.

The scenario I’m giving of Matt is completely IMAGINARY.

However, this imaginary scenario is influencing Matt’s real-world behavior.

In Matt’s mind, the narrative of ‘anything that can be held against me must be removed’ is playing.

Why Perfectionism Fails with Creative Works

The reason perfectionism causes anxiety is because it’s not the right mindset for creative fields.

It’s quite destructive.

‘Why do you think that is?’

Because with creative fields, it’s impossible to ever FULLY be pleased with your material.

An artist will paint a painting.

Afterwards, they will begin the tweaking process.

The tweaking process lasts for a few weeks.

Once the final product is ‘done,’ the artist thinks a few more tweaks can be made.

So, they optimize again…

Same with a writer.

She just got done with a novel.

Edited it for a few weeks.

As she is reading it back, she wants to add 10 more plot twists.

Despite the artist & writer being in different fields, that sense of dissatisfaction is there.

No art is fully perfect.

‘That sucks!’

No, that’s where the magic begins.

How to Get over Perfectionism Anxiety

Words are perception programmers.

Learn to use the right words & your problems will instantaneously melt.

  • Rather than being a ‘perfectionist.’
  • Keep ‘perfecting.’

‘What’s the difference?’

Perfectionism is a noun.

Perfecting is a verb.

Perfectionism is a state.

Perfecting is a process.

Normally, a perfectionist is pleased with themselves on a conscious level.

They are like, ‘Oh, don’t mind me! I’m just a perfectionist.’

As if it’s a badge of honor.

But on a subconscious level, they feel anxiety.

The subconscious narratives are beyond their awareness.

Which makes it difficult to break out of the loop.

That’s like having a virus on a computer & insisting that nothing is wrong with it.

Break out of the loop by saying, ‘I am perfecting.’

This does 2 things.

1. It allows you to view your art as a marathon.

Some of the greatest artists, writers, and speakers are prolific.

The whole quality vs. quantity debate is idiotic.

Quantity LEADS to quality.

A master only becomes a master through repetitions and refining.

When someone is ‘perfecting,’ they aren’t overanalyzing one piece, because they understand there are more pieces on the horizon.

Practice hard and welcome dissatisfaction.

‘Dissatisfaction sucks though!’

Not at all.

2. Dissatisfaction is the creative fuel for inspiration, more artistic pieces and activating growth mode.

The dissatisfaction from your prior piece allows you to alter your behavior for the next piece.

The writer who felt they could have created more emotions for their protagonist in their last book, creates compelling emotions for the protagonist of their new book!

Lessons from the past influence art of the future.

Confidence is Built from Overcoming Analysis Paralysis

Content is not real until it’s published.

You’ll notice the clicking of the ‘publish’ button creates a feeling in the heart.

Very subtle.

The subtle clicking within your heart is the paradigm gradually shifting.

Rather than a person who is a perfectionist.

Now you’re the person who is constantly perfecting.

One piece is not seen as life or death.

Rather, communication skills, artistry, content creation are viewed as a marathon.

Each lap works in iterations.

Create more, gather more data & perfect from there.

Procrastination will never get you started.

Perfectionism will never get you finished.

Break through the loop and start creating.

Never be a bystander who allows your art to remain in the shadows again.
