A Beginner’s Guide to Self-Hypnosis
The following chapter is from Limit Breaker: 101 Short Stories, Essays, and Insights to Improve Communication Skills
Hypnosis.
When you picture the word, you probably see some creepy old man swinging a watch in front of you reciting:
‘You are getting verrryyyy sleepy.’
Accurate?
‘Accurate.’
Point is, we all have our unique interpretation of hypnosis.
And unfortunately, most interpretations are highly inaccurate.
On TV, you’ll see a hypnotist as someone who is sinister & is playing with human behaviors.
But that’s not the full picture.
Let’s break down hypnosis.
In simple terms:
- Hypnosis is when the brain is highly susceptible to suggestions.
This typically happens in many ways. One way is through intense focus.
Picture the situation of thehypnotist swinging the watch.
It’s not the watch that makes a person hypnotized.
It’s the intense focus on the watch that makes the person hypnotized.
Whenever there is a laser like focus on something, a person is put in a trance like state which makes the mind more open to suggestions.
Storytelling is a form of hypnosis.
A good storyteller will seamlessly create mental movies which will cause the recipient to be in a trance like state.
But let’s go deeper.
Let’s say you want to hypnotize yourself, what do you do?
Well, it’s a matter of walking down memory lane.
‘Why memory lane?’
It’s because your inner child holds the answers.
Up to the age of ~7 years old, the subconscious mind is like a sponge.
A child absorbs everything around them.
That’s because the child’s brain is operating in Theta waves.
Theta waves are when the brain is highly open to suggestions (more on this shortly).
‘Why isn’t it easy for my brain to absorb suggestions later in life?’
It’s because the brain waves change as you mature.
The 4 Important Types of Brain Waves for an Adult:
-Beta: Consciousness
-Alpha: Relaxed
-Delta: Sleeping
-Theta: When you are waking up or going to sleep.
As I mentioned, around the age of ~7, your brain is operating in the Theta waves.
That is when your brain is most receptive to suggestions!!
Notice something from my Brain Waves list?
As an adult, you are in the Theta state TWO times in the day.
When you are waking up or going to sleep.
That is when your brain is highly open for suggestions.
Aka: Hypnosis.
‘Wait, really?’
Yes!!
As you are waking up, you are still in a dream like state.
And as you are about to go to sleep, you are about to enter a dream like state.
That is your opportunity to HYPNOTIZE YOURSELF.
Remember this.
Your current reality is a projection of your subconscious mind.
Your conscious mind can try to make all the changes it wants, but unless your subconscious mind complies, it will be tough.
The point of hypnotizing yourself is to you make your subconscious mind comply.
During those 2 times in the day:
-Visualize your future self. Use your imagination.
-Practice gratitude.
-Consume empowering content.
The average bubba starts their morning & ends their night with checking their phone.
During these 2 times, they can hypnotize themselves & rewire their mind, yet they choose to waste it.
Scratch that, I lied.
They do hypnotize themselves.
Just towards the wrong direction.
Don’t be like them.
Be different.
Quick recap:
- Hypnosis = Trance like state where the brain is open to
- Hypnosis is best during the Theta brain
- You have Theta brain waves when you wake up & as you go to sleep.
Two opportunities throughout the day champ.
Use them wisely.
