3 Topics for Impromptu Speaking: The IN -> OUT Formula

3 Topics for Impromptu Speaking: The IN -> OUT Formula

Impromptu speaking is an art form.

It’s one of the most versatile skill sets out there.

Impromptu speaking can be used during:

-Recording YouTube videos.

-Public speaking.

-Having a conversation.

-Dealing with a difficult client.

-Doing an interview.

and much more!

It’s rewarding when you can think fast & articulate to satisfaction.

But there is a problem.

‘Which is?

Few people will put in the work.

And there is another problem.

‘Which is??’

Those who want to put in the work have no clue where to start.

I want to give you a simple formula called “IN to OUT” in this article.

By understanding the IN to OUT formula, you will find topics for impromptu speaking on autopilot.

IN to OUT Topic Generator

There are certain topics which are very personal to us.

There are certain topics which are very foreign to us.

As you begin your impromptu speaking journey, I recommend you start off with personal topics and expand from there.

That’s the IN to OUT formula.

IN (personal experiences) -> OUT (topics that require imagination)

‘Why should I start off with personal experiences?’

For a few reasons:

  1. It gives you a chance to do some introspection out loud.
  2. You are a subject matter expert in this field.

When I ask you what 2 plus 2 is…you answer 4.

You don’t have to think too much because you KNOW the answer is 4.

Similarly, you hopefully know yourself in the same way.

‘I do know myself!’

Not quite.

A lot of memories & personal experiences are blurry.

So when you articulate a personal topic like ‘your scariest moment’ it will still require some work.

Work is good!

Behind work is where the impromptu speaking muscle gets exercised.

OUT topics are things that make you uncomfortable.

Talk about a conflict that is going on in an alien civilization.

^Foreign topic.

This topic requires much more imagination & thinking on feet skills.

The more outward we go, the more we delve into uncertainty.

Behind uncertainty is where creativity lies.

Some people can jump straight into OUT topics.

But I recommend you warm up with IN -> OUT.

3 Topics for Impromptu Speaking Challenge

There are rules you need to follow with impromptu speaking.

Let me share 2 rules before giving you the challenge.

#1. No formal planning.

If you do some planning in your mind real quick, that’s whatever.

But you should not be pulling out a paper and pencil & writing out what you are going to talk about.

#2. Always finish a talk.

You may be tempted to mail it in whenever you catch yourself fumbling.

However, that’s an impromptu speaking sin!!

ALWAYS finish a talk from beginning to end.

A lot of times, you will surprise yourself.

Bonus Tip: Record your talks so you can measure your progress.

Start a private YouTube channel or start recording videos on your phone.

Let’s get started off with some topics.

1.     Talk about a personal fear that you are aware of & what you plan to do about it

The reason I am telling you to talk about a fear is because it gets your emotions involved.

Emotions getting involved may seem like a bad thing (especially when it’s negative).

However, feeling emotions while speaking GROUNDS you.

Without any feelings in your body, the talk can be too fluffy & will have you overthinking.

Talk about the fear however you want to talk about it.

And be honest if you plan to do something about it.

If not, share why you don’t plan to take any action on your fears.

‘How long should this talk be?’

Make it 1-2 minutes.

2. Share how the next 10 years of your life will look, career-wise.

For this topic, we are still in the IN category.

However, we are exploring a little bit outwards.

  • IN, because we are talking about ourselves.
  • OUT, because we are bringing up a topic that is projecting forward, not backward. Imagination is required.

You may have done some strategizing about this already.

Or thinking 10 years forward may be a completely foreign concept to you.

In either case, talk about it.

Make this talk funny.

‘Why funny?’

Why not?

Humor plays a crucial role in impromptu speaking & makes it easier to think of ideas.

This allows you to settle in your body & feel calm.

Instead of rushing through your talk, there will be gentle pacing.

Make this talk 3-4 minutes.

Remember…I want to laugh at least once while hearing your talk.

3. Create a conflict between 2 imaginary characters plus a resolution.

‘Does this have to be a fantasy?’

It can be a fantasy but doesn’t have to be.

You don’t always need demons, dragons, and angels when talking about imaginary characters.

This is an OUT topic. Requires heavy imagination.

But here is a little trick…

You can use splashes of your personal experiences to create these imaginary characters!

Let’s say you got bullied as a teenager by a kid named Jacob.

As a kid, you couldn’t do much about it.

As an adult, a part of you wants to beat up Jacob.

Well, now you can create 2 imaginary characters named Stacy & Mariah.

They have a similar conflict with a subtle twist.

You can create a story where Stacy got bullied by Mariah in middle school.

As adults, Stacy wants to get revenge.

That’s when you can sneak in what you would do to Jacob if you were ever to see him.

Your personal experiences are pouring into this new character.

Guess what?

‘What?’

You just created unique content!

Referencing your personal experiences makes it much easier to explore uncharted territories.

Allow this talk to be 4-5 minutes.

Practice is King

Content is king in the online world.

Concentration is king in the mental world.

Practice is king in the impromptu speaking world.

At a core level, we are impromptu speaking all the time.

When we talk to our friends, we don’t have index cards & highlighters.

We just talk.

‘Then why do I feel uncomfortable when impromptu speaking?’

Because you feel like you’re doing a foreign task.

You compartmentalize the act of impromptu speaking from other facets of your life.

The more you practice the IN -> OUT formula, the more impromptu speaking becomes integrated into your life.

This builds character as well.

A person who stays in the present makes wiser & more intelligent decisions.

Impromptu speaking is just that:

Collapsing time and imprinting your thoughts on present-day reality.

Practice!!!
