3 SIMPLE Steps on How to Improve Writing Skills

3 SIMPLE Steps on How to Improve Writing Skills

There are 3 steps to improve writing skills.

  1. Write more.
  2. Read your writing back.
  3. Do steps 1-2 forever.

If you follow these 3 steps, then you don’t need to read the rest of this article.

‘Really?’

Yes, really.

The act of improving writing is rather simple.

However, execution is where it gets tricky.

The 3 steps I listed above are going to be a struggle.

‘Why do you think that is?’

Because you must understand the person across the mirror.

I do not know any writer who is not an introspective person.

  • They know how to learn from their memories.
  • Great writers can spot lessons in the mundane.
  • And they don’t need too much to make an impact.

A lot of this article is going to discuss the intangibles of a great writer.

By understanding the intangibles, you’ll understand why the 3 steps I provided at the beginning of this article are so profound.

Great Writers are Fearless

You cannot perceive or communicate the truth if you’re moving scared.

It’s like trying to see your reflection in a pond where there are waves.

Your mind is like a pond.

It’s either still or shaky.

A shaky mind is a fearful mind.

Constantly worrying about:

These problems prevent you from being a clear and expressive communicator.

It’s because you are worried about everything but your writing.

When I say fearless, I don’t mean to act like an idiot.

Like swimming with sharks or dolphins. (I’m not hating on you SeaWorld).

Instead, I mean to put the writing ahead of you.

Yep, you’ll be surprised.

Not everything is about you.

For a writer, their creation & desire to express the truth is ahead of them.

That’s what makes them fearless in the lane of writing.

Write A Lot to Spot Good Writing from Bad Writing

I write a lot on my Armanitalks Twitter account.

This draws attention.

Every now and then, I get DMs from other accounts asking me to retweet a tweet of theirs.

Unfortunately, I do not immediately see the DMs.

When I am cleaning out old messages, I see their initial retweet request.

As I’m about to retweet it, I notice that they deleted it!

Later, I found out the process of deleting tweets is called, ‘Cleaning the Feed.’

This is what a lot of accounts do.

Especially big accounts.

Not only does this make the algorithm happy that ‘all’ the tweets do well.

It also gives the mystique of having a high engagement count.

Others look at this big Twitter account as some sort of deity & think:

‘Wow, he rarely posts. However, each time he posts, it’s a home run!’

Failing to understand the concept of Cleaning the Feed.

There is an illusion which implies that you’ll be a skilled writer by writing every now and then.

Ha!

Nope.

Also, it’s pretty selfish to think like that.

You’re making it about yourself, engagement rates, sense of mystique, etc.

Everything but your writing.

Chances are that you will not become fearless.

You’re not exercising any great skills.

You’re pandering to an algorithm.

This game may work for some time.

However, an algorithm is not loyal to you.

It is loyal to itself.

So, it will be wise of you to be loyal to yourself.

Great Writers Read A lot

Reading is a skill set.

The skillset is broken down into a few different sub-skillsets.

The sub-skills include:

-Reading the right books.

-Being able to spot good writing from bad writing.

Speed reading if need be.

-Learning from all writing styles.

-Having the stomach to read your own writing back.

The initial 3 steps I gave were:

  1. Write more.
  2. Read your writing back.
  3. Do steps 1-2 forever.

It can also be remixed to:

  1. Write a lot.
  2. Read a lot
  3. Do steps 1-2 forever.

For the remix, you are reading your own writing.

Also, you are reading other people’s writing.

I’m not off the philosophy that you copy.

I see great writers giving that advice.

‘Shamelessly copy other writers until you build your own voice.’

I’m not a big fan of that because I think you are starting off too outwards.

Instead, my philosophy is to write anything for yourself.

See what kind of voice you create on your own.

Then, when you read others, you will notice styles much more effectively.

I know people cite the famous Benjamin Franklin story, where he re-wrote lines from great authors to improve his own writing skills.

I don’t know the story in detail, so I won’t talk much more about it.

However, I am all about writing for yourself first.

Start off with the free-flow method (writing whatever comes to your mind) and assess from there.

My thinking is:

  • If I don’t have a body of work, why the hell am I going to imitate someone else?!

Different strokes for different folks.

With a body of work, it’s easier to appreciate the process of writing.

That’s when you can read & comprehend the level of skills some writers have (or don’t have).

Which sparks your imagination & hunger to improve your own skillset.

Revisiting The 3 Step Formula

  1. Write more.
  2. Read your writing back.
  3. Do steps 1-2 forever.

Behind the 3 steps lies a life philosophy.

A philosophy of always going after the truth.

Then expressing the truth.

It’s a philosophy where you start to put yourself second to your ideas.

When you’re not overly concerned about how you are ‘coming off’ to others.

This allows you to reach flow state at will & enter writing mode at will.

Don’t let a lot of these social media numbers fool you.

People curate their feeds.

But behind every great writer is someone who wrote a lot & read back their words.

If you’re not cringing at your old writing, then you ain’t writing enough!

Are You Ready to Write More?

The question you want to ask yourself is:

  • How will writing impact my life?

It’s not a question of whether you want to write or not.

You have no choice.

From filling out forms to answering emails, writing texts, etc.

Writing is ingrained in society.

It’s like asking, whether you want to pay your bills or not.

You have no option in the matter.

Hopefully, after reading this article, you are more curious about the art & science of writing.

How 2 writers are never the same.

Why do other writers write?

What is their style?

When you get curious like that, that’s when it becomes easier to start a blog, write a book, journal, tweet, etc.
